Your home isn’t just a place to rest your head; it’s a statement of you. That is until it comes time to sell it. Your dramatic flare, your impeccable taste, and the gigantic photo of your family over the mantel–all have to go.
According to the National Association of Realtors® 2009 Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers, 90% of homebuyers can’t see a home’s potential which means they can’t see past the home’s décor. Many times personal items such as photos, diplomas or accessories distract the homebuyer. While they can imagine a family living there it’s just not theirs.
So how do you get people to look at your home’s potential? Depersonalize it. Simply pack up your photos, mementos or awards and put them in storage. The same can be said for child’s toys, college furniture, ornate furniture, alcoholic beverages and other items that reflect your personal taste. For example, you might love your pink and white zebra print bedspread and curtains but many people will not. It is best to put it away and use it in your next place.
Do you have a pet? Some people do not like animals or are allergic to them. Make sure your home is free of all the tell-tale signs of your pet such as liter box smells, dog bones, fur covered rugs and even the pet itself.
Remember when it comes to your home’s décor think neutral and minimalist. Don’t pack rooms with furniture and use neutral colors such as beige, tan or white. Refrain from over decorating and keep accessories as well as appliances to a minimum. Remove magnets and other items off the refrigerator and make sure each room is filled with light. Keep your home clean and clutter free.
