Did you know that home burglaries are the highest during July and August? That’s because burglars look for signs that you’re not at home. If you and your neighbors take vacations at the same time there are less people watching your street.
While you should always take precautions, no matter what time of year, here are some helpful tips for when you’re away from home.
- Stop mail and newspaper service or ask a neighbor to collect them for you
- Use timers for lights and electronics
- Don’t leave your trash can on the curb
- Don’t post vacation plans on social media sites
- Lock windows, doors and garage
- Use your security system if you have one
- Keep the grass cut and your trees/bushes trimmed
- Make sure all house entrances are well lit and use motion sensors
- Don’t leave spare keys outside—leave them with a trusted neighbor or friend
- Have a friend of family member stop in and check on things periodically while you’re away
