Are you looking to become a first time homebuyer but are a little nervous about the whole process? Relax here are some tips to help you get started.
Find a buyer’s agent that specializes in working with first time homebuyers. Ask your friends, co-workers and family whom they used.
Once you have a list of a few people you would like to consider, give them a call. Talk to them and ask them about their experience, what areas they specialize in and how they plan to communicate with you. Don’t forget to ask them for references and check those references out.
Determine where you want to live as well as criteria or features you want in a home. For example, some people can’t live without a gas stove while others are more concerned with room size or having the space for a home office. Realize that depending upon your budget and location you may have to compromise on some features.
Once you have found a target area, look at websites like Zillow to see what houses are selling for in the area. Also look to see what they sold for and what Zillow thinks they are worth. Talk to your realtor about the market.
Figure out how much you can afford and where you can afford it. Some up and coming areas are more affordable than established neighbors. If you look for homes close to your target area you may get a larger, more updated home for less money.
Discuss with your realtor to determine whether the neighborhood you are looking at is in an upswing or decline. Obviously you want a home that is affordable but you also don’t want to buy a home that is worth less in 2 years.
