Did you know that September 28th is Good Neighbor Day? This holiday, a brain child of Becky Mattson of Lakeside, Montana during the 1970s, was in recognition of importance of good neighbors. Mattson, along with the support from several members of Congress, Presidents and Governors, managed to make it a National Day.
In 2003, the US Senate passed a resolution establishing September 28th as Good Neighbor Day.
While having a day of recognition is plus, great neighbors and neighborhoods are made by the residents who take the time to care about one another every day.
So what can you do to make your neighborhood great?
- Try helping your neighbors, especially the elderly, in some way like watering their plants or keeping a watchful eye when they’re out of town.
- Be friendly! Smile and say hello.
- Share a meal or have a barbecue.
- Organize a block party or community clean up day and get to know your neighbors a little better.
- Make your neighborhood a place where others want to live. Maintain your home and property.
- Report crime and keep your streets safe by establishing a neighborhood watch program.
