Did you know that on average seven people die in home fires in the US every day and cooking is the leading cause of these fires? Heating equipment, electrical fires, smoking and candles were the other sources of home fires in this country.
Since October 6th-12th is National Fire Prevention Week and this year’s theme is Prevent Kitchen Fires, I thought we would put together a few safety tips from the National Fire Prevention Association to help you prevent fires in your kitchen.
Pay attention-Unattended cooking is the leading cause of kitchen fires. Keep a watchful eye over your stove top and oven.
Keep away-Make sure oven mitts, utensils, towels and other items that can catch on fire are far away from the stove.
Be alert-Don’t cook while you’re sleepy or have been drinking.
Don’t leave-If you must leave the kitchen turn off your stove.
Kid-free zone-Kids should stay at least 3 feet away from the stove and areas where hot food or drink are being prepared.
