Are you looking to sell your older home and you’re not sure how to attract today’s first time homebuyer? Here’s a few tips to help you market your home to a younger crowd.
- Lighten up – Get rid of heavy draperies and dark decor. Open up the windows and let the sunshine in. If the room still seems dark, add some strategically place lighting.
- Go neutral – Remove any wallpaper and paint the walls beautiful neutral shades of warm gray or tan (think Potter Barn Colors). Avoid using golds and pinky colors that will date your house.
- Update appliances – New, modern appliances, especially stainless steel, will appeal to younger buyers and make your home more aesthetically pleasing.
- No deferred maintenance – Young families don’t have the time to deal with unfinished projects. Repair broken items such as walls, windows, doors, cabinets, heating systems, etc and replace worn or dirty carpeting. Finish your projects before listing.
- Declutter and depersonalize – If all a potential homebuyer sees is your stuff (30 year old photos, knick-knacks, train sets etc.) they won’t be able to see themselves living in your home. Let them see themselves living in their new home by removing personal items and other decorations that may date the home.
